After over a year of nagging by mail from Comcast, I upgraded my cable modem. Sure enough, I now get 50 Mbps in my apartment, at least at the off-peak hour of 2200. (My son will probably be thrilled, because he & I used to interfere with each other.) But as I recall, Comcast uses these modems, which are also wireless routers, to sell your home WiFi bandwidth to whoever's in range. Not cool, and the subject of a lawsuit or two.

My solution? Part 1, already implemented, is to use my old Apple wireless router; I also get to keep my nifty network name that way. Part 2, to be done, is putting a Faraday cage around the Comcast box. Since I'm not using the WiFi from it, it should be harmless. It should also nicely sabotage Comcast, yes?

I'm sorry you have such a slow connection.

BWA HAHAH! I love the idea of the Faraday cage & screwing over Comcast. They shouldn't be selling what you're already paying for anyway.

That's... overly complicated.

You can disable the other-people wifi through your account, or, if you're me, drunkenly calling them up when you realize, shit, you've got the free xfinity wifi turned on.

I won't even get into tempest-shielding. That's just crazytalk.

Full disclosure: I abuse the shit out of the fact I have an Xfinity login. I just don't let other people use my wireless. They're generally not up on their shots, and therefore don't need to be on my home networks.

It may be even simpler than that: I just went to the account site, and as far as they're concerned, I have no WiFi service even though I have their hardware plugged in & turned on. It may just be a matter of plugging another wireless router into an Ethernet port, as I did.
