Her Nibs & I just got back from Good Night, And Good Luck. It was a pretty good flick, but that's not what I'm writing about. What I'm writing about is that our sitter, the much-loved Natasha who recently graduated from WSU, had never heard of Sen. Joe McCarthy, whose hearings are the backdrop for the movie. Jitt! Urngh! AAGH!

is she russian?

"Natasha" is an old joke between Her Nibs and me. We decided that she needed a code name so that other parents wouldn't learn her identity and hire her away from us. She was born in Korea and raised here.

russian components, korean components. all made in taiwan!
(bonus points for the quote's origin :)

I feel dirty for knowing that.

Hmm. I don't think any of my college courses had occasion to bring up McCarthy (the history class I took was on the industrial revolution).

High school did, though!

gack. egad.

*gibbers*

(no really, this stuns my brain so much that all I get is frustrated gibberish about it).

the typo really says it all for me.

lol! I was so stunned, I just couldn't type...

Hee hee, I know what you mean.

I'd learned about it in high school, too.

Maybe they don't talk about it so much anymore?

And a lot of people forget all that stuff the day after they write the test. Clooney mentioned in some interview, a week or so after it premiered, that they were running it by some test audiences in LA and half of the people didn't know who McCarthy was. Of course, these are volunteer movie-watchers in LA, but he was (as I was) pretty seriously shocked.

Some of the point of the movie was just to remind/show people that, by the way, there was this McCarthy guy.

I suspect that part of the point of the movie is similar to the point of The Crucible by Arthur Miller - that the current political climate of the country is reminiscent of the Salem Witch Hunts.

I loved that he joked about taking out ads in Variety suggesting Joe McCarthy for Best Supporting Actor in the film...
