trying to Burnerize the Wendling at B/ IAS

Went to the long-anticipated open of the Burien Interim Art Space, or B/ IAS. Basically, it's an old parking lot that's been partly torn up and temporarily turned into a sculpture garden. There are quite a few Burners involved, and the opening party is still going on as I type for a little while longer. I got to introduce m'boy to Space Virgins.

Fire. Big pretty metal things. I wish I'd had my camera to record the concrete footprints holding burning liquid (methanol?), or "The Passage", a giant steel mother and child with the mother appearing to hand the child fire about once a minute.

The flame throwers were a bit too bright for the Wendling, and to my surprise he didn't dig the cute fire dancers. However, he loved the flame cauldrons, i.e. tall, psychedelic barbecues. The openings for the wood are about ten feet off the ground, and people were basically shooting hoops with boards. And he liked "The Passage", of course. The symbolism escaped him, but not me.

Methanol is surprisingly hard to see when it's burning. It's not as invisible as hydrogen, but it's pretty evanescent.

The only reason I say that is that (I thought) I heard the person in charge mention it during his thank you speech.

We really should have gone to the opening, especially since we live just 5 minutes southwest of there.

I went in the evening and had a blast!

Ah, too bad we missed you! The Wendling & I were out of there by 6:00 for dinner. He was pretty cold & maxed out anyway.
