I dreamt last night that I was going to Burning Man with a family, including children under ten, that I don't know that well in their RV. It wasn't what I'd call a good dream.

I'm surprised and maybe a little sad at how little I want to go this year. Last year was indeed the Hit Me Where It Hurts Burn. And when I do go I think I'm due for some glamping. Last year one of my campmates who's roughly my age told me she'd looked in the census report at the number times people reported going to the Burn. There's a big falloff after seven. I've done six, if you'll recall.

When you're riding your bike, do you ever get passed by somebody who then slows down enough to be annoying, so that you end up passing them right back, permanently? And is this person always an older white dude who isn't wearing bike gear? Yeah.

Dudes, I'm not randomdreams but I ride about 10 km most days. There's a good chance my bike dick is bigger than yours, so it'll be better for your fragile self-esteem if you just stay back there.

I think a huge part of my hesitation to burn these days has to do with politics, honestly. I have weird anxiety about the expense, about the way various jurisdictions oppose it, about leaving home or my kid for very long, and more and more I feel like an emergency might happen while we're there that makes it hard to get home. I mean, the imagination can go wild, but I also don't think that re-prioritizing to resist fascism is a very extremist idea, at the moment.

You know, the jurisdictions opposing just make me want to go more; illegitimi non carborundum and all that. But I hear you about the expense.

I'm not sure this is the case with you, but I see this a lot more with guys trying to pass women. (I don't think I've ever experienced this, but then again, in the last five years I can count the number of people who have caught up with me while I was riding, on one hand.)

I think those bike riders are the same ones who, in their cars, pull out from a side street right in front of me and force me to hit the brakes, even though there is nobody behind me for blocks.
