I just spent about 45 minutes with the Wendling in Georgetown getting the lowdown on how to make large statues out of fiberglass from Kim Graham, the artist behind The Silk Mermaid. She's got mad skillz, and she loves to explain stuff. M'boy dug it, but not nearly as much as I did.
What were we doing there? She invited people over to help her make silicone molds for the last few days, but we got there right as they were closing up. So, we missed the work (and the considerable mess) but we got the talk. Brilliant timing!
What does she get out of it? Hundreds of hours of badly needed free labor, and from her four volunteer engineers, knowledge of how to do animatronics.
She lives in one end of the studio space in about 500 sq. ft. Everything she owns that isn't art-related fits in there. I'm half tempted to be this chick.

ack_yeahright & hubby can attest, I'm pretty good at coming up with grandiose plans. Well, now I've met somebody who knows how to execute them and is willing to teach.
