sistawendy: me in a green velvet dress in front of a brick wall, laughing and looking up as I think, "WTF?" (wtf laughing)
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the first superhero movie I've seen in years that didn't make me think, 'I want those two hours back, dammit.' Was it because it was animated, and therefore shared the graphic part of the appeal of the comic book source material? Or was it just better writing that didn't slavishly adhere to some "canon" story out of some sense of obligation to or fear of fanboys? Predominantly, but by no means exclusively, the latter.

I didn't go to Burning Man this year, but I hit the Labor Day sale at REI and of course ended up with stuff I'd need on the playa:
  1. Three (3) big tubes of titanium dioxide SPF 50 sunscreen, i.e. the kind that doesn't kill marine life. I know that two tubes are just enough to get me through a Burn.
  2. New shades to replace the ones I've trashed. I'm proud of myself for not losing them.
  3. Rubberized wire ties to replace the zip ties I'm nearly out of. I was never crazy about the amount of plastic waste I generated by using plastic zip ties, and REI cleverly presented a solution while I was waiting in the (long) checkout line.
When did I become the kind of person who gets excited enough about REI sales not just to shop at them, but to write about them? What have Seattle and Burning Man done to me?
