A little bit of web searching turned up what may be the easiest way to find technological extraterrestrials: look for their city lights. Assuming you can get a direct image of a planet at all, this would be much easier than anything I suggested earlier.

rigel_p tells me that the most general indicator of life as we know it that I mention, oxygen gas, would be harder to find than plants much less lights because you'd need a back lit image of just the sliver of atmosphere.
'Nuther words, depending on E.T.'s preference for going out at night without a natural ability to sense things in the dark (and who wants to contact aliens who never go out dancing?) E.T. may be easier to find than a world ruled by pond scum or dinosaurs.
