I found visiting actual Pompeii incredibly moving, and did my best to actively ignore the curled-up "casts" (which, if you look at the science, contain skeletons, at which point I think casts is a bit of a misnomer) because they were distracting me from the sociology.
The gladiator cells actually looked out onto the field of combat. If they looked out their windows, the only view was the place they were about to fight to the death.
The brothel, which I went to with great sex-positive interest, was pretty pointed about the fact that the real advertising selling point was imported (and thus "exotic") slaves, thus demonstrating that some crappy aspects of racism are old as dirt.
Meanwhile, they had something very, very closely approximating McDonald's walk-through windows on every street. Which really brings home the "no, people _lived_ here" aspect.
