sistawendy: me in profile in a Renaissance dress at a party (contemplative red)
This is my weekend of trying to get into a holiday mood: doing my nails all the way for the first time in months, The Rise Of Skywalker with my son, a night at the Monkey Loft.

Everything the critics have said about The Rise Of Skywalker is true: it's a forgettable mess. I found it a lot like The Force Awakens, only even more phoned in. I could smell the cynicism and wasted acting talent. The Star Wars movies that people like best - The Empire Strikes Back, The Last Jedi - have something in common: characters being characters and not just cogs in a plot machine. But I guess Abrams & co. forgot that. This is a lot of vitriol to pour on an escapist movie, but I think the nine-year-old me who first heard that there were going to be nine Star Wars movies (!) would be terribly disappointed at how the series has stumbled to a close.

I had an OK time at the Monkey Loft: local boy Pezzner, one of the Dirty Bird people from San Francisco. My favorite part, though? The roof was unexpectedly open. There was no sound system or bar set up out there, just people dancing to whatever was on the PA and hanging out. It was truly a chill space at 43°F.

More social stuff lined up this week and next. Excellent!

And they could at least have had a great ending moment like...

Finn (to Rey): I love you!

Rey: I know.
