I got on a Zoom call with about ten of the Beavers of Camp Beaverton, the Burning Man theme camp that I camped with for the second half of my six trips to the playa. It was all lovely until near the end, when the Beaver who works for the Burning Man Project Organization - the Borg for short - told us about the situation within.
I've mentioned that Burning Man is cancelled this year, as it should be. And it shouldn't surprise anyone that most of the Borg's revenue comes from ticket sales. Put those two together and it means chaos in the Borg. My fellow Beaver says it's hard to tell from one day to the next whether they'll make it through or everything will fall apart. Everyone there has taken a pay cut.
As I learned at Lambert House, if you run a non-profit in trouble and you have potential rich benefactors, you go to them first. The Borg are, luckily, being smart and doing exactly that. As much as I hate the tech bros and what they've done on playa, we need them to help now. Some of them just might.
One of the Beavers said she saw someone riding a bike around Lake Merritt, the tidal lagoon in Oakland, with a big flag mounted on their bike reading, "THE MAN WILL BURN." That's the spirit.
If there really is no more Thing In The Desert, who wants to join me in burning a Man at Golden Gardens?
