I fell down a wiki hole a night or two ago, and I found out who was responsible for the fabulous old tube stations, especially the ones with the colorful tiles. He was architect Leslie Green, commissioned to design dozens of tube stations right around the start of the twentieth century. And design them he did, thereby making himself a leading exponent of British Art Nouveau. He died relatively young, sadly, and several of his above-ground station entrances have been demolished. Many others, however, survive at least as exteriors along with nearly all of the platforms and tunnels that he designed. His designs were beloved enough that they've been reproduced in recent times as part of station construction. Further evidence of London being over the top and not sucking.
