I got a new taillight for my bike. Problem: it's vertical, not horizontal like the old one, so I can't attach both it and my fender to my seat post. After about half an hour of puttering around with it and trying to make it work, I decided to do something you're not supposed to do.
I've attached it to the back of my helmet. I used the little rubber strap that comes with the light, threading it through one of the vents. It's not so tight that it wouldn't move in the event of a collision, but I would have to worry about sharp fragments of a shattered taillight in the vicinity of my head. But at least I can do a pretty good job of avoiding accidents in the first place by being visible and not having that visibility interrupted by theft.
Edited to add: Nope, the light on the back of my helmet is too uncomfortable. And about a third of the way through this morning's ride the ratchet that tightens the helmet suddenly let loose by several notches. I've executed plan B: raising my seat post so that I have barely enough room to put the light where it was designed to go.
