You may recall that I'm going to Germany later this month. That meant I needed to swap an on-call shift for work, and update the service that alerts the on-call people so it knew to alert me. But instead of tediously overriding the existing schedule for fourteen individual days, I overrode it for one long, two-week block.

Some of you may know where this is going: not breaking it up into individual days told the paging service that it was OK to page me in the middle of the night, which on my team isn't the case. I got paged at 2315, 0015, 0115, 0215, 0315, and 0415 overnight for an issue for which I'd already done everything I could.

I was a couple of hours late getting up this morning.

I'm going to be so ready to go to Germany by the time it rolls around.

You know, that's what I should have done. On previous teams, I was on the hook for on call at any hour.
