an experiment in curly hair maintenance

You've all seen by now that I have curly hair. It's also really fine. I wash it every five days. Really, every four is too often, and every six is too seldom. Right after I wash it and only then, I put in a little product* for frizz control. But it doesn't look so good for that last day or sometimes two, even though I put my hair back for sleep, bike rides, and showers.

What to do? Both the Tickler and cupcake_goth independently gave me the same answer: a sleep bonnet instead of a hair band at night, preferably silk or satin. I had a birthday not so long ago, so I requested one from my son as a present. He delivered.

How is it working? Well, the first day after the wash wasn't so good, with some hair clumps sticking out in random directions as I've never seen them do before. But the next three days post wash have been noticeably better than usual.

Maybe I should do a hair band the first night after a wash, and a bonnet thereafter. I'm also not sure how a bonnet will do for really warm weather, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

How's this for a shallow fashion detail?

I am also a curlygirl and I wear the bonnet! I have a silk one. I mostly wear it after I wash (once a week, my hair is v thick and dry) so that it can dry in a protected environment. I should probably sleep in it but I haven’t tried that yet.

My bestie has the same issue. If you two ever meet, I will suggest the topic. She has it down to an art. She sleeps in a spandex like tube that makes her hair look like Bart Simpson's mother. I will have to ask her what she uses.

Now that I've embraced the curly girl lifestyle myself, it sounds like we have really similar hair but different ways of tangling (haha) with it. This could be a fun conversation over coffee or a beer sometime? Also, I haven't seen you in forever since Covid stole October from me.

Hell yes! There's fantastic coffee at Lighthouse a ten-minute walk from the Devil Girl house, and Triangle Spirits and Mr. B's meadery are down the hill, just to name a few.

It's becoming abundantly clear to me that I will have no bandwidth until the capital campaign goes public, which is next Tuesday. Tentatively, Lighthouse on Saturday or Sunday soon thereafter? (Early afternoon so as to allow for workouts.)
