Dec. 17th, 2002 03:44 pmI missed
rough_angel for coffee, but I spent the free time (I took the day off and Her Nibs was napping) doing something rather goth: I walked around the Lake View Cemetery, the one just north of Volunteer Park (est. 1872) on an overcast day. It's far and away the coolest one I've seen in the Seattle area. From the highest point you can see both the lake and the sound. Greeks with Bible quotes in Greek and English. Russians with portraits and distinctive crosses. Row after row of Chinese. Serbs. And, of course, the inevitable Scandihoovians, but nothing in their languages unlike Kirkland. I didn't find Hendrix, but I found something better: the Dennys! The oldest of them was born in 1788. You know Bonney Watson funeral home? Bonney & Watson are planted toe to toe under some matching snazzy black rocks not far from the Dennys. The Blethens. Lots of other big Seattle names. Creepiest headstone: a small concrete job dated 1995 (no birth date) with a German surname and "EMP. ID." stamped into it with a number. There are some huge-ass monuments in there. I wonder if the survivors of any of these people resented the expense.
