My life is full of women and machines.
Nov. 18th, 2015 01:26 pmI interviewed candidates for Ada yesterday afternoon. Ada is a programming academy - don't say "boot camp" - by and for women. They seem to do a good job, and I have to love their mission of addressing the gender imbalance in the tech industry. It's a strange experience to talk to people who (I hope) have fallen in love with programming as adults, not children like so many of my co-workers and me. And why didn't they fall in love with it as children? Because a) too many schools suck, and b) they belong to the slightly-more-than-half of the population that gets told repeatedly throughout childhood that they're no good at technology and lots of other things. Must control urge to strangle and/or barf. One more time: I've been very lucky. And it isn't right that luck should count for so much.
Had a lovely evening with the Ticklerbattling my insecurities about sex learning all kinds of fun and useful things about her. She then took me out to her fave sushi place in West Seattle, Mashiko, which lived up to her hype. Pro tip: it's small and popular, so you'll need to make a reservation.
Got texted awake at 0507 by machines yelling, "Help!" Sadly, it wasn't one of those issues I could fix in seconds and then go back to sleep, because I sorely needed to. I'm low on sleep, I have to talk about stuff to my entire company in a few hours, have dinner with my son, move stuff out of the old place, do laundry, and then talk about non-divorce logistical stuff with Imminent Ex. Just typing that wears me out.
