the grind

I worked half a day Saturday to basically stop some data bleeding that had been going on since I moved Jane the service into AWS. Not ideal, but not that bad. A teammate handled the last deploy.

Except he deployed a service – let's call it Dick – with old, janky secrets management and he ended up not giving Dick a couple of newer credentials that it needed. No one knew that until not quite 8 PM Pacific time when our customer support people in Australia raised the alarm. Some awfully fundamental functionality was broken. Seventy minutes of sheer terror ensued.

I still need to reattach Jane's limb, as it were. That's not hard but it'll take days. My teammate above? Had to take today off for a family health emergency. Another teammate? Had a plumbing emergency while on a video call in which we discovered a previously unknown service dependency that was getting in our way.

These last few days have been the kind that make me wonder if Mercury's in retrograde. Not that I've bothered looking that up; it's the principle of the thing.

And from the Dept. of Mom, her schizophrenic elder sister called my mom and told her that my remaining maternal aunt and her son are dead. They are very much alive, as I suspected and as Good Sister confirmed to me. GS was kind enough to clue Mom in. Good Goddess, what does extreme old age hold in store for my sisters and me?
