Nun reestablishes contact with a niece!
Sep. 25th, 2021 08:37 amI called my mom just now because that's what I do on weekends; I no longer stick to a specific date and time because Mom doesn't know what day it is much of the time. A young voice I didn't recognize answered the phone. I assumed it was one of the (paid) caregivers, so I identified myself as [First name Last name] calling for my mother.
My interlocutor was Niece E, the elder daughter of Evil Sister. After talking to Mom and holding my tongue as usual these days about the demented ramblings – No, Mom, you don't need to do taxes anymore and no, Dad isn't giving any more speeches – I asked for E on the phone again, in defiance of her mother's wishes as so rudely expressed to me over ten years ago.
I acknowledged how long it had been – almost fifteen years! – since I heard her voice. I didn't go into why that happened, much less how I felt about it and what I've been up to in the mean time. I told her to call or write if she wanted. She said she'd like that.
She assured me that Mom is, well, the same as ever lately, which is as good as we can hope for these days. I told her that Mom's been confabulating about her as she does about everyone else. (I wonder what she comes up with about me. It can't be much more outlandish than the truth.) The scoop on E is that she's taking a break from school; she was a student while working full time, which is hard enough, but then she ran out of tuition money. She's close to finishing her AA and wants to move on to the University of Florida. (Hurrah!) E's "roommate" is a woman, not a man as Mom said.
I gave her the lowdown on the Wendling: not in school, not really dealing with his future. I was apologetic about all the stepping & fetching the United Sister Front has asked of her. She was very gracious about that; I guess she's her father's daughter in that respect.
I hope I hear from E again soon. I hope her mother has gotten over her earlier bitchiness. I guess we'll see what happens.
