I went to a wedding at the submarine base at Bangor, WA today. Two observations about signs in the area of the base:
1) The signs on the nearby freeway direct you to the "subase", one word with one B, not the "subbase" with two B's or even the "sub base". Soobase? Where they park Subarus or something? I asked the groom, who's a Marine, about this and he said, "We're the military. We're not that bright."
2) On the base itself signs pointed to (among many cryptic acronyms and abbreviations) a place called Deterrent Park. The groom confirmed my suspicion that it's an ordinary park with a creepy name -- creepy, at least, to the civilian guests. I'm not so sure the jarheads find it to be so
