The Wendling held his bladder and bowels for an entire fucking day to avoid peeing or pooping in the potty. He was in obvious pain on the way home from dinner at his grandpas, but didn't want us to stop. We're afraid he's going to hurt himself. Heap Big Specialist has been contacted.

Happy news to achieve Taoist balance: I looked for rough_angel in our aforementioned coffee joint, not really expecting to find her, but I did. Next time I'll do it earlier.

This might be an odd suggestion, but do you know if he refuses to use the toilet because he's afraid of it? I know that small children sometimes tell stories about monsters (snakes/rats) coming up out of a toilet. And if you stop to think about it, toilets might be dangerous--the stuff in them goes away mysteriously, with a certain amount of noise; maybe they could eat small people too. :)

Might it help to go over the mechanics/plumbing of a toilet and how it works with him? Possibly simplified--I donno how good he is with models/conceptual information.

I know he's afraid of the toilets at school because of the noise the valves make, but I don't think that's the problem at home. Just getting him to sit on a toilet isn't hard.

Plumbing, though. Heh. That's a good suggestion for him.
