  1. The Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, especially if you have a boy with you. This is the oldest European settlement in the U.S., founded in 1565. The current stone fortress dates from the late 17th century, and was never taken by force. Cannons and bastions and turrets, oh my!
  2. Anastasia State Park, just a few miles south of St. Augustine. Miles of wide, white, condo-free beaches. On a 75-degree cloudless, breezy December day, there's no better place to be. Thanks to Strawberry Blond Sister for telling us about it.

I'm ready for it to be cold again. Thankfully the heat (85 degrees yesterday!) will be leaving with you.

Did your offspring comment that the ocean is on the wrong side? I always do that in Seattle. It's unnerving...

The Castillo is cool, and I can see how it'd be even more cool for a boy. I think that the powder magazine, with its internal rooms with low doorways, was deep enough that a boy could lose his parents completely if he was sneaky! (I remember it being useful for getting a little peace and quiet, or a little privacy...)

The magazine is pretty neat. I was right there with him, though.
