I've written here before about David Serkin-Poole, the cantor at our synagogue, i.e. the guy in charge of music, readings of Torah during services, and education therein. Why's he so special?
Where to start? He came out as gay to the congregation in 1980, and half of them abandoned the synagogue. He and then-as-now chief rabbi (who married Nibs & me) stuck it out, though, and they hold their heads high. And oh by the way Cantor - I feel weird calling him by his name, even here - is half of the first gay couple to adopt in Washington state. The kids he adopted (Three? Four?) were all special needs.
In other words, he's a mensch. And way cool. He also loves to talk. Yeah, I know, he's Jewish, but when other Jews like Nibs say you're talkative, it's impressive. So I spent over two hours at Kiku Sushi telling him everything, and I do mean everything, that's happened since Full Time and a lot of what preceded it. He probably knows more about me now than you do, because you've had time to forget a lot of it.
Slightly sad note: Both Kiku Sushi - a little Japanese joint that caters to lots of actual Japanese - and the next door Uwajimaya are moving west, away from me and from MyCo. I used to have lunch at Kiku with
cupcake_goth, and the staff there knew her. My guess is that the landlord is calling it quits; the building has seen better days.
