Went for a looooong and lovely Ethiopian dinner at Cafe Selam at 2715 E Cherry. It's a tiny place, but oh so tasty. Minor hitch: we had a waitress who hadn't quite mastered English yet. My charming & lovely companion L and I got carded when we ordered honey wine. L suspects that they may have wanted to check for the magic F on my license.
L & I killed a bottle of honey wine, so we decided to walk it off and talk about absolutely everything. My favorite.
Cafe Selam is near Martin Luther King Way & Cherry, which has four (4) Ethiopian places within two blocks; I can't vouch for the other three. It's a fascinating neighborhood in other respects, too. Yes, some of it's decidedly ghetto, but there's also a gigantic pear tree on Cherry that was planted in 1889. L & her partner restore homes and parts thereof for a living, so she was able to point me at 801 MLK Way*, once a grand and beautiful house now heartbreakingly close to being condemned.
L believes that the house has been subdivided among several tenants, each responsible for maintaining their part. The wooden details on the third floor and the eaves, the lace curtains, and what look like a ceramic artist's output on the front steps make a jarring contrast to the tarps - plural - on the roof, overgrown yard and gutters, broken windows, darkness, and general dilapidation. There ware exactly two new things on the whole huge house, a lovely lozenge-shaped window on the ground floor and about ten feet of back fence. L used to commute past it, and has known about it for a long time. She's never seen a for-sale sign in front of it. She thinks it's unrecoverable, that the foundation may be wrecked, too. I hope she's wrong, but the place sure looks like she's right. There's a sad story about that house, maybe several.
The two queer interns who go to my yoga class & I had Thai dinner together, since there was no yoga tonight. (Studio being refloored?!) We've decided that there need to be more queer hot tub parties, especially for people who are (ahem) too old to be getting naked with interns. I'm going to miss them when summer is over.
*I hope I've got the address right. It's the NW corner of MLK & Columbia.

The house is 3 years behind in taxes, but it is not currently on the foreclosure list.
Dinner was wonderful. The honey wine was ever so yummy, and so was my dining companion. ;)
