Believe it or not, I'd never been to Folklife until yesterday. For those of you tragically not living in the Seattle area, Folklife is Seattle's free annual folk music festival that happens every Memorial Day weekend. Folk music is these days defined loosely, though, because I went there for the chiptune showcase.

What is chiptune, you ask? Techno based on the music from old video games, played on laptops, Gameboys, and boxes of random audio circuits. Last year on a tip from nwtekno.org I went to a show of this kind at (Where else?) Pink Gorilla, a game store on the Ave., the UW's main commercial drag. There I met the young, beautiful, and friendly but sadly straight E, who clued me into other shows, including the one yesterday.

At least some of the same fellows from the Pink Gorilla shows were there at EMP, and Live Animals in particular rocked the house. They made ravers who probably aren't old enough to drink legally freak out on the dance floor with old hippies, and maybe even a few old ravers. Ahem. I have their EP now.

While at Folklife, I walked past a couple of homophobic Jesusoids with loud voices & loud signs. I took a leaflet and immediately tore it in two. The next time I was at that corner they were gone. I wonder if they got shooed away by the authorities.

I did another thing I've been putting off for too long yesterday: I bought a tie-dyed dress. Hey, it's me.

Afterward, I swung by [livejournal.com profile] ack_yeahright and her hubby J's place, ostensibly to buy a sleeping bag, but of course it ended up being an epic chat. They have plans to get me in trouble at Critical Massive and (ahem) elsewhere. I have plans to let them. I needed to be reminded of my raison d'etre.

ETA: I would have posted this in the morning, but the WiFi at Lhasa has been out all day. Housemate J, who owns the wireless router, passed through the kitchen and out of the house before I could remember to tell him. This has been a Murphy's Law kind of weekend.
