sistawendy: me in a Gorey vamp costume with the back of my hand to my forehead (hand staple forehead)
Well, I can't say I'm all that surprised: this past Tuesday, Dr. Leather Bear gave me the come-to-Jesus talk about my salt intake because I'm barely pre-hypertensive and headed in the wrong direction. He points out that getting my estrogens out of a vial doesn't help, which I knew. He hadn't seen me since shortly after I joined StartupCo, where there are plenty of salt-laden snacks available at no extra cost at all times. I've been availing myself of them. I've been eating Vegemite at [livejournal.com profile] tithonium; he and Dr. Leather Bear both find that horrifying, but for different reasons.

I think I can swing this without too much trauma. Last night I gave away my leftover olives and cheese from my birthday party to Nibs & m'boy.* There are low-salt, nutritious things to eat at StartupCo, and hot sauce to make them taste like something. Dr. Leather Bear has asked me to check my blood pressure at a drug store at the same time of day on different days.

*Nibsmother, who as you may recall hates me for changing sex, is at the old old place for the weekend. I told Nibs to be sure to inform her where the cheese & olives came from. She said she would. Nibs does have her moments.

I'm not saying this is a 100% good idea, but if you do exercise that involves a _lot_ of sweating, you can dump enough minerals to make a difference in your salt levels.
I found this out on a bike ride that involved me drinking 8 liters of water that day and still losing weight.

If you are interested, I have lots of experience with keeping salt intake low (I'm supposed to be keeping mine below 1000mg a day).
I can suggest low- or no-salt options for a variety of levels of cooking ability =).

Much appreciated! You may safely assume that I'm one step above cooking moron. I know to avoid prepared or packaged foods, or stuff that actually tastes salty.

OK, I haven't forgotten about this, contrary to appearances. =}

What would be easier for you, discussing over email, or meeting in person at your place and reviewing your pantry and typical eating habits?

Hahahah! I barely have anything in my pantry. I scavenge at work for most lunches & dinners. Email is good.
