I live in one of the cheapest apartments in what's otherwise a pretty expensive, lily-white neighborhood. But if you walk around enough, you'll see signs of COVID-19.
Grocery shopping wouldn't ordinarily be newsworthy, but a) this was the first time I'd walked up Phinney Ridge in nearly two months thanks to my broken ankle, and b) there's an official pandemic on. And before I'm accused of hoarding, I really was low on toilet paper.
After slowly & stiffly climbing the ridge, the first thing I noticed was how normal everything looked: traffic, parking enforcement, an old dude crossing the street using a shopping cart as a walker, mothers with strollers. I got my apples & tea, and on my way to the toilet paper I spotted a young woman with a twelve-pack under each arm. She was telling one of the staffers that one of the local big box stores was selling TP for $60/12-pack. So that's not quite normal. And when I got to the toilet paper, the stock was present, but definitely depleted. I got one (1) twelve-pack. OK, I was on foot, so one was all I could reasonably carry.
Oh: I wasn't shopping at my usual, closer supermarket because it's closed for two days of deep cleaning as of yesterday: staffer got diagnosed with COVID-19. Hence the hill climbing.
