sistawendy: me in the Mercury's alley with the wind catching my hair (smoldering windblown Merc alley)
If any of you guys are bored with my Burning Man nattering, you might want to check back in mid-September. It's going to eat my brain for the next couple of months.

Went to another Space Virgins meeting and volunteered to be in charge of trash on the playa. As I told them, it suits me because I'm anal. The SVs also need to pick the brain of a lighting guru. I have people who are or know people like that right here on my friends list, yes? (*looks hopefully at [livejournal.com profile] leenerella*) My dentist's tent has arrived at the Abbey, and I'll be spending the evening putting it up with the Wendling to make sure it has all its parts, etc.

I've been lobbying Nibs for a new iPod for months because a) the first one was 99% full as of yesterday, b) Nibs has always wanted an iPod of her own, c) the old one (a 4th generation) glitched on my many variable bit rate MP3s that contained distorted low notes from a synthesizer, and d) the old one can't do gapless playback. C & D in particular make a techno fan cry. Nibs got a bunch of checks in, so now I have a shiny refurbished black 30 GB G5. The new one is blissfully free of the VBR glitches. The gapless playback isn't perfect, but at least it doesn't step on the beats the way the old iPod does. The new iPod's loaded with my playlist -- less skipping on shuffle now -- and the old one has been wiped and loaded with Nibs', which we got ready in time for the new one to arrive. (Why doesn't Nibs get the new one, you ask? She doesn't care about the new features and my playlist is at least triple the size of hers. So there.)

ETA: Gapless playback appears to work flawlessly on better-quality rips. Aw, yeah.

For brain-picking? That's probably do-able for Luke. Want to send me an email and I'll present it to him? colleen -at- mearcair.com

what sort of lighting?

Theatrical lighting. [livejournal.com profile] leenerella's hubby does this for a living, but I'll give you the scoop: the SVs are putting up two boxes, each 8' high by 16' long by (I think) 8' deep, and they're putting muslin on one side. The idea is to light the boxes so that people dancing in them make silhouettes on the muslin. In particular, we need to know the power requirements.

The designer of the space has corrected me: each level is 16' x 16', not 16' x 8'. She says there's something similar in the movie Chicago, and the idea is to have perfectly even lighting without "hot spots".

I'm feeling a bit desperate, I haven't gotten a reply to my application for a ticket.

Shoot. Hugs and good luck. I'll see you at the newbie picnic.
