Her Nibs & I tag-teamed the Wendling last night, keeping the poor, squirming boy on the toilet for over an hour and a half last night. He did eventually pee in the potty, for only the second time in our house. I was skeptical that it would work at first, but I didn't want to take him off the toilet because
a) Her Nibs had already (uncharacteristically) lost it by that point and might have gone postal on me.
b) he'd already been on the toilet the whole time I'd been running the dog, and it seemed a shame to waste that effort.
c) if this is a battle of wills I don't want to back down.
d) letting the Wendling think he can play his parents off each other under any circumstances is a Bad Thing.
People often ask me why he doesn't want to pee in the potty. I doesn't seem to me that it's really a battle of wills, no matter what the Nibbsmother says. He's not acting defiant; he's acting frightened. I think he still believes that his pee and poop are part of him and he's afraid to let them out into the toilet. (OK, then why does he like diaper changes? I dunno. Shaddup, wise guy.) Such beliefs are pretty common, albeit in much younger children. Guten Tag, Herr Doktor Asperger.
