I knew my son expected my transition to be a genetic transformation with gloriously far-reaching physiological effects. What I didn't know was that he thought it would be involuntary, or as he put it, a disease. I guess when you've been steeped in the mechanics of transition for thirty years, you forget that they're not obvious to everyone.
