sistawendy: me in my nurse costume looking weirded out (weirded out)
For the impending Anomaly, i.e. Ingress tournament, that's in Seattle (and Milwaukee, and Rio di Janeiro (!)) on the 27th [livejournal.com profile] randomdreams suggested that I contact my team leader and ask what inventory I needed, because he's a gentleman among smurfs*. He needn't have bothered; she just contacted me.

I have to say that the multi-tab spreadsheet is impressive: a beefy list of items, both in-game and out, that would be good to have. Sheesh, I've gone to Burning Man with sheets that had fewer cells, and as regular readers know I'm anal-retentive. Yes, there's the external battery that [livejournal.com profile] bork suggested, but also wired (?) headsets (?!) for communication, and a recommended app. I'm the lowest-level player on the team, and boy am I glad I leveled up to 8. I wonder if they'll turn on me and throw me to the vicious rebel scum when I tell them I have to take my son to work late that afternoon.

'Nuther words, this is all waaay more serious than I anticipated.

I've been to a few anomalies, so here's my tips:

1. Don't worry about a headset for communicating. If you're not going to use one for anything else, don't sweat it. If you get pushback, just cite 'finances' or something. I'm not going to use one, because as a tiny person playing an outside game with a fancy phone? I need to be able to hear the external noise around me.

2. If you need to cut out early, explain that at the very beginning. I've never seen anyone get grief over that, especially when it comes to something like family responsibilities. I would, if you get the chance though, pick up your swag packet the night before.

If you can, pick up the swag packet as early as possible, because in our experience they often run out.

Generally, everyone meets up, takes some pictures, then about an hour later, the whole shindig starts, and it's three or four hours long, during which there's like 15-30 minutes of gaming, and then the remainder being moving en masse to the next location. After that, it's mostly drinking. A lot of people drop out of the last fight because they've run through all their inventory.
Presumably your team won't expect you to show up with 50 AXAs given the amount of time you've been playing. Still, pace yourself.

You'll need to be going to your teams farms ahead of time to get gear.

Yup. Luckily, there are a few near my place.
