The bad news: I still haven't found a vibrator that works for me. The Siberian Siren, when we last talked, recommended that I try Lelo models other than the one I have, which is Inga my Smart Wand. Clearly, the Smart Wand was meant to compete with Hitachi's Magic Wand, beloved of so many of my friends, but I've tried a Magic Wand to no avail: too strong, too high a frequency. The Smart Wand comes (Ha!) close, but the SS says that the various Lelo models are different enough mechanically to make a thorough investigation worthwhile. Maybe as a Christmas present to myself; Lelo vibes are the high-price spread.

The good news: I don't feel a pressing need for the right vibrator. My right wrist hasn't been sore in months, possibly because the connective tissues there have strengthened. Am I taking less time? Maaaybe. It's hard to tell. If so, it's on average.

There's always [personal profile] randomdreams's suggestion of making one for myself. I will consider that seriously, but as a last resort. It's quite a mechanical design problem.

(You'd been waiting for an orgasm update, hadn't you? Yeah, I knew it.)

I don't know if it will work for you, but try the Magic Wand outside of panties. It's too strong for me as well so outside of undies is plenty. I also have to obtain from it if I know I'm going out on a date two or three days because of the desensitizing it does. Good luck!

Reiterating previous suggestion, with additional suggestion of trying to hack what you have. It's completely likely that the Hitachi et al use ac motors so the speed is fixed, but they're definitely not operating at line frequency, so there must be some mechanism for changing the speed (probably gearing) that might be alterable. Or, maybe, replace the AC motor with a DC motor and a variable power supply. Hm. That'd be an interesting design: wifi microcontroller driving a motor driver, so you could control the speed via an app. Ideally you could also control the amplitude, but that requires far more mechanical alteration.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskElectronics/comments/2ddz1c/help_me_hack_the_hitachi_magic_wand_vibrator_make/ seems awfully relevant.
My favorite driver is the l298n, which unfortunately isn't the right choice here: it doesn't have either the voltage or current capability. Let me do some reading and get back to you.

Friends (actual friends, not me pretending to "have a friend") have had good luck with using a dimmer switch with the Hitachi to tone things down. They seem quite enthusiastic about that combination, so that's just offered as an idea.

Ook! They plug into **house current**?

Batteries may be more expensive but way less risky (in terms of consequences of mechanical/electrical breakdown). ^_^

Oh...keh, that makes some more sense, now.

My ex had something similar, but it was atrociously loud and made terrible grinding noises from its gearbox. My little battery-powered friend is delightfully quiet and eminently portable, even though it has been an occasional source of amusement to border guards in various and sundry countries far away from home.

What ever soaks your boat, eh? ^_^

It looks like there are things specifically designed as hitachi dimmers available.

(Getting caught up after all the conference stuff...)

My first few vibrators were handmade - though in my case the motivation was simple: I was ten, I hit puberty early, I had an idea what a vibrator was, but I had no idea where to buy one (and some suspicion no one would sell one to me)... and I was pretty good with electronics. Sex drive and no interest in exploring it with anyone else yet => grab the tools and start hacking.

I should probably reconsider this approach. The current generation of Wahls are, AFAICT, utter crap (unless there's a line I haven't found? I really need to stop by Babeland next time I'm in town). I've been taking mine apart and resoldering the components every time I melt or otherwise destroy them for years.

I, too, find magic wands way too much. I used to own one. The only thing at all useful about them is that is someone else was using one, they could get them in the right general area, and it was great.

the Hitachi is WAY too strong and fast for me as well. I personally prefer a bullet vibe. Simple, usually the cheaper variety has the better-for-me speed and strength, and they are almost always easy to find.

I do remember your unusual designer anatomy. Speaking of which... I have an email to send you.

Natural Contours make some really delightfully-curved and well-engineered vibrators. They hit all the right spots with out looking excessivel (ahem...) 'anatomical'.

If ordering online, do it via a disposable e-mail account, because they can and **will** send endless reams of quasi-creepy spam messages.

I always come back to the pocket rocket. I'm guessing it would be amenable to hacking - it's very simple and its speed/intensity totally depends on how fresh the batteries are.
