There's a custom among Jews that a deceased family member's tombstone isn't unveiled until a year (according to the Jewish calendar?) after the death, i.e. the first yahrzeit*. I bopped up to the cemetery in Snohomish County with the Wendling for the brief ceremony for Exdad's unveiling early yesterday. The gang was mostly there: nieces, nephews, cousins, a grandchild, and even a couple of ex-spouses.

From the Dept. of Odd, Exdad's tombstone is a small bench. That's right: he, or maybe his widow, has encouraged people to sit on their grave, and looking around the cemetery, I could see that they weren't alone. That's... not how the goyim do things, but I guess it's none of our business.

We all put rocks upon the bench, like you do if you're Jewish, but there was also a stone vase for flowers, which was definitely Exstepmother's idea**. Ex & I used to have a recurring kabuki argument about flowers vs. rocks on graves. I appreciated the symbolism of the flowers; as a gardening fiend, she disapproved of the waste. Fun fact: Israelis use bigger rocks than diaspora Jews.

As the professional wordsmith, Ex was drafted to speechify. She mentioned that not a day went by when she didn't think of her father. I can relate, even after over twenty-two years in my case, and I told her so.

This being a Jewish function, there was food at an unusual hour. I found out that Exbrother doesn't know what a furry is. I told him not to google it from work.

Ah, Exdad. It's a damn shame, but alas, an inevitability.

*That spelling is a mix of English and German orthography that makes my inner language geek shriek, but it appears to be the most common. It is, of course, a transliteration of the Yiddish for "anniversary". Yiddish is traditionally written in a modified Hebrew script, so there are many transliterations that drive native English speakers meshuggah.
**Exstepmother is of 2nd- and 3rd-generation east Asian extraction.

Didn't club or go to any techno shows. Got sufficient sleep all weekend. Feel strangely guilty. Freaky. I plan on making up for it this weekend, though, after helping Nibs get her Jewish mother on and feeding people. Suggestions welcome, natch.

Went to family learning day at Sunday school with the Wendling -- no Nibs. Learned that Tziporah was Moses's wife. I always wondered what Tzippi was short for. OK, OK, they covered some important stuff too, much as it pains me to admit it.

According to the Wendling, the Torah is "that big squirrel from Israel behind the bima".

In his defense, he corrected himself after I started laughing. The squirrels in question are old ones from Europe, not Israel.

Thing 1: Since Vegemite® is made from yeast, does putting it on matzo remove its kashrut l'pesach?

Thing 2: It finally occurred to me how to describe the grass-and-oak covered hills that you see in Marin county from route 101: they look made up, unreal, as if somebody painted them on a seamless billboard. The colors and lines are too simple, at least as seen from the road. Then again, I wonder if the spreading live oaks growing out of pale sandy soil and hung with long beards of Spanish moss that I grew up with look unreal to Californians. I've seen lots of those from a distance of inches.

A day of much Hebrew and a little fasting (OK, I ate lunch, but I skipped breakfast so I got constipated. Happy?) left me in not nearly as bad a mood as previous years. Maybe there's something to this couples counseling stuff.

My big accomplishment for the weekend: applying for a Mercury membership. Now I don't have to bum guest slots off people. Had much fun there Saturday night. Someday I'd like to close the joint.

Wanted: a laptop so I can circumflatulate in bed. I haven't been pursuing my little projects with as much dilligence lately as I think I should. Hanging out with childless people reminds me of that constantly.

A whine: I'll miss something fun at the Republic because Her Nibs' grandmother will be in town for a wedding that none of us think should even be taking place. (The couple involved is Too Young.) It's just stoopit and annoying in so many orthogonal dimensions.
