The SETI@home folks got some dedicated telescope time at Arecibo and, for the first time since the project began four years ago, are pointing the telescope at specific places looking for ET based in part on the data they been crunching all this time. (Number of data units crunched by this nun: over 1500 and counting on two machines.) I just got the e-mail announcement a few days ago; the contrast with current events was jarring.

Sickthink: the war might just be a face-saving way to get US troops out of Saudi Arabia, where they apparently inflame the passions of some of the locals.

Time for a nunly confession: I'm not anti-war. I certainly hope, though, that when all is said and done, the much-discussed WMDs are all found and destroyed.

After the Challenger incident, it was revealed that the engineers had piled up a long list of safety "mods" that they wanted to make. Some of them were indeed made after the fact. Another tidbit that floats to the surface of my news freak memory is that the shuttle guys long ago came up with better replacements for the tiles. I wonder how long the mod list is now.
