Messed up item #1: Her Nibs' blood tests results are so bad -- inflamation markers still rising -- that her rheumatologist thinks he can get our insurer to pay for one of the new "biologics", possibly enbrel. The messed up part is the degree to which insurers dictate doctors' decisions. On the whole, though, I think this is good news. I've heard good buzz about enbrel. Please, please, let the side effects be tolerable.

Messed up item #2: I called Ronald Reagan a veggie over on the crackboard, and I got ripped for being unsympathetic to Alzheimer's patients. The messed up part is that I lost sleep over this; I refuse to feel sorry for Ronald Reagan. (Footnote: says my marriage counselor, "My father died of Alzheimer's. They are vegetables. You should feel sorry for their families.")

I once read that Gorbachev claimed that Reagan's defense buildup prolonged the Cold War a little by giving Soviet hard liners an excuse to, well, be hard liners. Is Gorbachev wrong?

of course he is wrong, being blazing idiot.

hard liners never needed any excuse to be such.
if not 'Reagan's defense buildup', soviet economy would not collapse in another few decades, and hardliners would be able to continue executing their power.

i dont care if its reagan or satan incarnate, nobody, and i mean NOBODY should have to suffer from alzheimers. if you havent ever been around it, you have no idea what its like. i hated reagans presidency and all it stood for, but i feel sorry for the man, and even more for his family.

i disagree with this absolutist statement.

i would not mind at all if hitler, stalin, mao, saddam or arafat would suffer from alzheimers, metastatic prostate cancer, leprosy, worms in penis, chronic acute pain syndrome and muscle atrophy simultaneously. that would be poetic justice.

That's how I feel about Mr. Sharon.

Some people are far too fucking sensitive. Don't sweat it. And, yeah, having worked in the Alzheimer's wing of a nursing home I know how horrible it is, but fuck, most of the time they are veggies. Its those increasingly rare moments of cognizance as the the disease progresses that really suck, when they try to die and their families won't let them. We had one patient, who when she was lucid would refuse to eat, she hated what she had become, so her son authorized a feeding tube. And never came to see her.

I'm of the opinion that most of those who were over-sensitive have either never dealt with it, or better yet, warehoused the family members they did have with it.

In the time I worked in the nursing home, only one of our patients ever had a visitor.

Personally I think the worse crime is being an over-sensitive dick about offhand comments, while quietly shutting grandma up in people-warehouse and not actually dealing with it.

Oh, yeah, like other people on the board don't make fun of worse things. Who ripped you?

Loiosh, which isn't too surprising.
My grandparents had Alzheimer's and they were veggies. I wasn't old enough to fully understand my grandfather. My grandmother for the most part was happy. In the early phase she was mean and frustrated. After a while though she was quite happy. She was at an assisted living facility and we would visit at least once a week. My mom had Baker Acted her (taking control of business and finances) so she didn't need to worry about life. On good days, she was reliving her childhood with my mom. I was usually her cousin and mom was usually her aunt. Towards the end, I was a total stranger and she felt threatened. I would watch from afar and mom would visit. I was there mostly for my mom.

The people suffering from Alzheimer's are veggies. The families are in hell and are very frustrated and in hell for it. You probably just hit a nerve of someone going through it. If they are jumping on you because it is an unPC thing to do, shame on them.

Most of the time I hate this perscribed politically correct shit. If you can't laugh at the shit the world has thrown at you, get off the planet. Everyone has problems and everyone gets called names. It's just a fact of life, laugh about it.
