sistawendy: me in a green velvet dress in front of a brick wall, laughing and looking up as I think, "WTF?" (wtf laughing)
No, I haven't committed any crimes (yet), I was just signing my updated will. Since it had been four years since my last one, I'd forgotten what a big deal it is with the precise verbiage and witnesses. But that wasn't the interesting part.

Interesting part #1: Mr. Mouthpiece said that my last will was way overpriced. As in, the previous firm billed for many more hours than it should have taken them. He said it was so bad that I could make a bar association complaint, which is SRS BSNS indeed. That sort of figures: they kept trying to upsell me with trust options for m'boy, and the previous firm had a definite slimy feel to them.

The thing is, I wasn't the one that got ripped of. I used Microsoft's legal benefit (ARAG) to pay for most of the previous will, so if anybody got swindled, it was MSFT. Ex insisted that we wring everything we could out of those gold-plated benefits before I left, and we just barely managed. I only used the slimy lawyers because that's who ARAG sent us to. I'm not in the least inclined to bother with it. The slimy lawyers aren't the only professionals I encountered on the east side who were taking Microsoft's self-financed and seldom-questioned bennies for all they were worth.

Interesting part #2: Mr. Mouthpiece, after asking if he could ask a personal question, asked me why I decided to transition. Because he seems like an otherwise decent and with-it guy, I laughed, informed him that his question is the FAQiest of trans FAQs, and told him, in order, the answers most of you know:
  1. If you have to ask, you'll never really know.
  2. I tried dudehood for 25 years and was miserable.
  3. I had to look in the mirror day after day and see something I knew nobody else saw*, and yet see what they could see at the same time.
  4. When Steve Ballmer the Surgery Fairy handed me a magic wand, my mind exploded.

*Apparently a few of the people reading this saw it, too. I needed that validation desperately.
