sistawendy: me in a tie die dress with a flirty look on my face (flirty hippy)
For the last fifteen years Seattle has had this annual event called the Hump Film Festival, a selection of about twenty short porn films made by "people who aren't porn stars but who want to be one for the weekend". I'd never been; my experiences of porn films had been distinctly meh. The Proprietress, however, had been a few times and made a date of it.

After a bit of hurried nearby sushi, we were among the last into the early evening showing (We're old, OK?) at On The Boards in lower Queen Anne. The house was packed; the two of us ended up sitting one behind the other on an aisle.

How was it? Pretty great, for the most part: production values were higher than expected. The Prope said that they were lower in the first couple of years. Yes, there were one or two that overused cheezy video effects. The Prope lamented the preponderance of pretty people, and rightly so, but here's the great stuff:
  • A few of them were laugh riots. Best Humor is one of the categories for a cash prize. My fave in this category was Best In Show, a spoof of Hump itself, which was useful to a noob like me.
  • There were a few kinky ones, including the extra-mean Tell Me What You Want. The Prope and I both voted for that one as the best of the kink category.
  • I admit to preferring to watch lesbian sex over other kinds of sex. Disco Made Me Do It reminded me an awful lot of what I've seen at Camp Beaverton. The Prope & I voted for this one in the best sex category.
  • But best overall? Lost & Found is a well-written and well-directed narrative about a woman who's trying to get her orgasms back after pregnancy. HIGHLY GODDAMN RELATABLE.
  • There were one or two that were really sweet, like the straight D/s scene or the two zaftig ladies who did an artful rope and wax scene.
I'm sorry to say that the date didn't continue after the Prope took me home; she wisely wanted to avoid catching my cold, which still isn't quite gone. I feel like I owe her some porn-worthy action of our own. And dinner. Nevertheless, I had a wonderful time.

I got to introduce two friends who cosmically needed to meet each other: [livejournal.com profile] elspethdemina and [livejournal.com profile] gement. [livejournal.com profile] elspethdemina is the sex toy maven extraordinaire with a pressing business need to make the porn section at her place d'emploi, Wild at Heart, easier to find things in. [livejournal.com profile] gement has a degree in library science.

Even a relative innocent like me knows that porn comes in many, many flavors. (Ixnay on the oke-jays.) These flavors even come in many flavors, which [livejournal.com profile] gement prefers to call facets: ethnicity, body type, gender, publisher, etc., etc. Porn customers are often interested in only a tiny subset of the flavors, so helping them find that subset is a real money spinner.

Said [livejournal.com profile] gement, with that many facets, hardcopy catalogs as [livejournal.com profile] elspethdemina originally envisioned aren't going to cut the mustard. You have lots of facets with porn, so you'd need many thick binders. Ergo, you'd end up with something we in the software industry call unmaintainable.

The solution is 'pooters, said our esteemed librarian. Old junk would suffice, but [livejournal.com profile] elspethdemina says it would be difficult to prevent even the oldest and junkiest of junk from being stolen. I can't help but wonder if that would be a problem if her store were in a better location or her bosses weren't idjits who insist on making it easy to steal stuff. We didn't come up with a solution on the spot, but what they both said made sense.

[livejournal.com profile] gement and I agree that [livejournal.com profile] elspethdemina is the awesomest of sauces.

Icing: I got to take [livejournal.com profile] gement home and measure em for a costume afterward.
